Some energy projects are built on new land. Others begin with places that already carry history.
Borzești is one of those places.
Known for its industrial energy legacy, Electrocentrale Borzești has been part of Romania’s energy landscape since 1956. Today, the site is entering a new chapter through the joint venture between OMV Petrom and Renovatio Group.
In October, we shared a post by Ionuț Cristian Ciubotaru, Vice President for Business Development at OMV Petrom, highlighting the transformation of Borzești and the prerequisites that can support its future as a clean energy hub.
The message captures an important idea: the energy transition is not only about replacing the old with the new. It is also about rethinking existing infrastructure, using accumulated know-how and building cleaner, smarter and more resilient solutions where Romania already has an energy foundation.
Borzești brings together heritage and future potential. The site has history, grid relevance, industrial context and the possibility to support new renewable energy development.
For us, this is what makes the project meaningful.
Together with OMV Petrom, we are contributing to a vision where former conventional energy sites can become part of Romania’s cleaner energy future. Solar energy, storage, modern infrastructure and strong partnerships can help transform legacy assets into platforms for long-term transition.
This kind of project matters because Romania’s energy future will depend on more than installed capacity. It will depend on how well we use existing locations, how fast we connect new generation to the system and how responsibly we build infrastructure that can support future demand.
Borzești shows that the transition can be both practical and symbolic.
Practical, because it supports cleaner energy development and system resilience.
Symbolic, because it connects Romania’s industrial energy history with the next generation of renewable infrastructure.
We are excited for the impact this joint venture can bring to Romania’s energy future.
Cleaner. Smarter. More resilient. Built on heritage, guided by vision.
